Seeing a breast specialist is not an assumption of cancer
One of the most common reasons women put off an appointment is the fear that walking into a breast clinic means walking out with a cancer diagnosis. It is worth saying plainly: a large part of specialist breast practice is establishing that a concern is not cancer, and explaining what it actually is.
Two assumptions cause the most delay. The first is that a lump will go away on its own. The second is that because a lump is painless, it cannot be serious. Neither is reliable — and both are reasons people arrive later than they meant to.

Understanding the symptom
How long it has been there, what has changed, and the history that surrounds it. This conversation shapes everything that follows.
Clinical breast examination
An examination by the specialist herself, in a private room. A great deal is established at this stage, before any scan is considered.
Investigation, where it adds something
An ultrasound, mammogram or biopsy is recommended when it will answer a question that the examination has raised — not ordered as a reflex. Age and imaging findings both influence that judgement.
What happens after that differs from patient to patient. That is the point of seeing a specialist rather than a search engine.
Sometimes treatment is needed. Sometimes reassurance is the outcome.

Questions people ask first
Do I need a referral to see a breast specialist?
No. You can book a consultation at Aroha directly. If another doctor has already seen you or ordered a scan, bring those reports along — but a referral letter is not required.
My lump doesn’t hurt. Does that mean it’s nothing?
No. A painless lump is one of the most common reasons women delay getting checked, on the assumption that anything serious would hurt. That assumption is not reliable. A lump should be assessed whether or not it is painful.
Is breast pain usually serious?
Breast pain is very common and frequently has a benign explanation, often hormonal. That does not mean it should be ignored — particularly if it is persistent, one-sided, or new for you. We have written about this in more detail in when breast pain needs a doctor.
Will I need a scan at my first appointment?
Not necessarily. An ultrasound, mammogram or biopsy is recommended when it would add useful information to the diagnosis. Where a test would not change the clinical picture, it is not ordered simply as a formality.
I’m in my twenties. Am I too young to see a breast specialist?
No. Breast concerns occur at every age, and several of the most common conditions in younger women are entirely benign. Evaluation is guided by the symptom and the clinical findings, not by age alone.
Do breast specialists see men?

Can I consult online first?
