Investigates, selectively
Decides whether imaging or a biopsy would genuinely add to the picture. A scan is ordered to answer a clinical question, not to cover every possibility.
Operates, when it is the right answer
Surgery is one of the tools available, not the default destination. Many breast conditions are managed without an operation at all.
A breast surgeon is the specialist who tells you whether you need surgery — which is not the same as the specialist who gives you surgery.

Being told you need an operation is a lot to absorb in one appointment. Many people leave with the recommendation but without a clear picture of the reasoning behind it.
A second opinion consultation is used to work through four things: what the diagnosis actually is, why an operation was recommended, whether any alternative approach applies to your situation, and what questions are worth putting to whoever treats you.
It is not a promise to overturn another doctor’s advice. Often a second opinion confirms the original recommendation — and that confirmation is worth having before you go ahead. Bring your scans, reports and any written plan with you.

Where a test would not add information that helps the diagnosis, it is not ordered. Specialist judgement means knowing which investigation answers the question in front of you — not running every test available.

Questions about seeing a surgeon
Does seeing a breast surgeon mean I have cancer?
No. A breast surgeon is the specialist who evaluates breast conditions, the majority of which are not cancer. Establishing that a concern is benign, and explaining what is actually causing it, is a routine part of the work.
Will I be advised surgery at the first appointment?
Usually not. The first consultation is an assessment — understanding the symptom and its history, examining the breast, and deciding whether any investigation would add useful information. Treatment decisions follow evaluation, not the other way round.
Can I get a second opinion on surgery that has already been advised?
Yes. A second opinion consultation is used to understand the diagnosis, why surgery was recommended, and what questions are worth asking. It is not a promise to reverse another doctor’s advice — and it may well confirm it.
Do all breast lumps need to be removed?
No. Many benign lumps are monitored rather than operated on. Whether removal is appropriate depends on what the lump is, how it behaves over time, your symptoms, and the individual clinical situation.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Any previous scans and reports — ultrasound, mammogram or biopsy results, and the films themselves where you have them — plus a note of any medication you take. If you have been given a surgical plan in writing, bring that too.
